War of the League

1835 · 19th century

The War of the League was a brief civil war in Costa Rica in September and October 1835. Cartago, Alajuela and Heredia formed a league against San José after the repeal of the law that had rotated the seat of government among the towns, leaving San José as the capital. The head of state, Braulio Carrillo, defeated the league, confirming San José's primacy and strengthening the central government.
