1833–1856 · 19th century

The Whig Party was a political party of the United States formed in the early 1830s by opponents of President Andrew Jackson. Led by figures such as Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, it favoured a national bank, protective tariffs and federal funding of roads and canals, won the presidency in 1840 and 1848, and broke apart over slavery in the 1850s.
