Wheelus Air Base

1943–1970 · 20th century

Wheelus Air Base was a United States Air Force base near Tripoli, Libya, used from 1943 until 1970. During the Cold War it was one of the largest American bases outside the United States, used for training and by Strategic Air Command, and its rent was an important source of income for the Kingdom of Libya. Gaddafi's government demanded its closure, and it was handed over in June 1970.
