Whigs (British political party)

1678–1859 · 17th century

The Whigs were a political faction and later party in England and Great Britain from the late seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Originating among opponents of the Catholic James II in the Exclusion Crisis, they supported the Glorious Revolution and the Hanoverian succession, dominated government under Robert Walpole and his successors until the 1760s, and later merged into the Liberal Party.
