William V, Prince of Orange

1748–1806 · 18th century

William V, Prince of Orange, was the last stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, holding the office from 1751, as a child, until 1795. His weak rule and the defeats of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War fed the Patriot movement, which challenged his powers until a Prussian invasion restored him in 1787. When French revolutionary armies conquered the Republic in 1795 he fled to England, and he died in exile in Brunswick.
