Xavante

Also known as A'uwe

The Xavante are a Gê-speaking indigenous people of central Brazil. In the 18th century they lived in Goiás, where they clashed with settlers and some were gathered into government villages, before moving west into Mato Grosso. They resisted contact with Brazilian society until the 1940s and now live on reserves in eastern Mato Grosso.
