Xie Lingyun

385–433 · 5th century

Xie Lingyun was a Chinese poet of the Eastern Jin and Liu Song dynasties, a member of the aristocratic Xie clan who held the title Duke of Kangle. He is regarded as the founder of Chinese landscape poetry (shanshui), describing the mountains and rivers of the south from his travels. A devout Buddhist, he also wrote on Buddhist doctrine, but his arrogance led to banishment and he was executed for rebellion in 433.
