Xiongnu civil war

57 BCE · 1st century BCE

The Xiongnu civil war was a succession conflict among rival claimants to the position of chanyu that split the Xiongnu Empire around 57 BCE. The confederation divided between factions led by Huhanye, who submitted to the Han Dynasty, and his brother Zhizhi, who moved westward. Accounts of the Xiongnu Empire treat this split as a major stage in the empire's decline.
