Yamasee War

1715–1717 · 18th century

The Yamasee War of 1715 to 1717 was a conflict between the Province of Carolina and the Yamasee, Muscogee and other Native peoples angered by the abuses of traders and by slave raiding. Attacks killed hundreds of settlers and traders and nearly destroyed the colony before an alliance with the Cherokee turned the tide. The crisis discredited the Lords Proprietors and led settlers to overthrow proprietary rule in 1719.
