Yeonsangun of Joseon

1476–1506 · 15th century

Yeonsangun was the tenth king of Joseon, ruling from 1494 to 1506, and is remembered as its worst tyrant. He carried out the literati purges of 1498 and 1504, the second in revenge for the death of his mother, who had been deposed and forced to take poison. He closed the national academy, banned writing in the Korean alphabet after critical posters appeared, and was deposed in 1506 and denied a temple name.
