Yu Deuk-gong

1748–1807 · 18th century

Yu Deuk-gong was a Korean scholar of the Silhak school in the late Joseon period, who served in the royal library under King Jeongjo. In his Balhaego, a study of the history of Balhae completed in 1784, he argued that Balhae and Unified Silla formed a period of Northern and Southern States, so that Balhae belonged to Korean history, a view widely held by Korean historians today.
