Yu the Great

traditionally c. 2100 BCE · 22nd century BCE · Also known as Da Yu

Yu the Great is the legendary Chinese ruler said to have tamed the great flood by dredging channels rather than building dams, and to have founded the Xia dynasty. Later Zhou and Han writers made him a model of the dutiful sage-king. Many ancient states, such as Qi and Yue, claimed descent from him or from his officials, and sacrifices at his tomb near Shaoxing continued for centuries.
