Confucius

551–479 BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Kongzi, Kong Qiu, Kong Fuzi

Confucius (Kong Qiu, Kongzi) was a teacher and minor official of the State of Lu whose sayings, collected by his disciples in the Analects, became the basis of Confucianism. He taught that good government rests on ritual propriety, benevolence and the moral example of the ruler, and travelled among the states of Wey, Song, Chen and Cai seeking office. From the Han dynasty his teaching formed the core of state orthodoxy and education in China and East Asia.
