Yuan Haowen

1190–1257 · 13th century

Yuan Haowen was a poet, critic and historian of the Jin dynasty from Xinzhou in Shanxi, widely regarded as the greatest poet of northern China in his age. He served the Jin court and lived through its fall to the Mongols, which he lamented in his verse. Refusing office under the new rulers, he compiled the Zhongzhou ji, an anthology of Jin poetry, and gathered records later used in the official history of the Jin.
