Zanzibar Revolution
The Zanzibar Revolution of 12 January 1964 overthrew the sultan and the government led by the Zanzibar Nationalist Party a month after independence. Insurgents led by John Okello and backed by Afro-Shirazi Party activists seized the islands; thousands of Arabs and South Asians were killed. Abeid Karume became president of the People's Republic of Zanzibar, which united with Tanganyika in April 1964 to form Tanzania.
