1957–1977 · 20th century · Also known as ASP

The Afro-Shirazi Party was a Zanzibari political party formed in 1957 to represent the islands' African and Shirazi majority. Led by Abeid Karume, it came to power after the Zanzibar Revolution of January 1964 and ruled the People's Republic of Zanzibar as a single party. In 1977 it merged with the mainland's TANU to form Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
