Afro-Peruvians

Afro-Peruvians are Peruvians of African descent, mainly descendants of enslaved people brought to work on coastal estates and in the cities under Spanish colonial rule. Slavery was abolished in 1854 under Ramón Castilla. Concentrated along the central and southern coast, notably in Lima, Ica and Chincha, they have shaped Peruvian music, dance and cuisine, including the festejo and the landó.
