Zhuang Qiao

fl. 3rd century BCE · 3rd century BCE

Zhuang Qiao was a general of the state of Chu who, according to the historian Sima Qian, led an army to the Lake Dian region of present-day Yunnan in the 3rd century BCE. When Qin conquests cut his route home, he stayed, adopted local dress and customs and made himself king of Dian. Historians treat the story with caution, since the archaeology of Dian shows an overwhelmingly local culture.
