Zwaanendael

1631–1632 · 17th century · Also known as Zwaanendael Colony

Zwaanendael was a Dutch whaling and farming settlement founded in 1631 near modern Lewes, Delaware, by patroons of the Dutch West India Company. Within about a year a quarrel with the local Lenape led to its destruction and the killing of all its settlers. Though short-lived, it gave the Dutch a claim to the Delaware valley, and Delaware dates its first European settlement to it.
