James II of England

1633–1701 · 17th century · Also known as James VII of Scotland, James, Duke of York

James II of England, also James VII of Scotland, was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1685 to 1688. As Duke of York he received New Netherland from his brother Charles II in 1664 and it was renamed New York; as king he created the Dominion of New England. His Catholicism and absolutism led to the Glorious Revolution, and his defeat in Ireland in 1690 ended his hopes of return.
