New Castle, Delaware

1651 · 17th century · Also known as New Amstel

New Castle is a town on the Delaware River in the US state of Delaware. The Dutch founded it as Fort Casimir in 1651, took it from the Swedes in 1655 and called it New Amstel; the English renamed it New Castle after 1664. It was the seat of the Lower Counties, the later colony of Delaware, until the capital moved to Dover in 1777.
