Albici

300 BCE – 49 BCE (approx.)

Hardy mountain people of upper Provence who fought for Massalia against Caesar's siege in 49 BCE.

Origins

The Albici lived in the hills north of Massalia, probably around the plateau of Albion and the area of Riez, whose Roman name Alebaece Reiorum may preserve theirs. Caesar describes them as old clients of Massalia.

Rule and society

Caesar calls them barbarians living in the mountains above Massilia, under the protection of the Greek city, and praises their courage. No rulers or institutions are recorded.

Decline and legacy

In 49 BCE the Massaliots brought the Albici into the city as defenders against Caesar's legates, but the siege ended in surrender. Their land was then absorbed into Gallia Narbonensis.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
