Alempois

800 CE – 1224 CE (approx.)

One of the smallest ancient Estonian lands, a district of central Estonia known only from the chronicle of the Livonian crusade.

Origins

Alempois appears in Henry of Livonia's chronicle as a small Estonian district near Sakala and Nurmekund in central Estonia. Its exact boundaries are uncertain.

Rule and society

It probably consisted of one or two parishes led by elders and shared the culture of the neighbouring Estonian counties. Nothing else is reliably known.

Decline and legacy

Alempois was taken during the crusaders' conquest of Estonia, completed in 1224, and came under the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and later the Livonian Order.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
