Ambiani

300 BCE – 57 BCE (approx.) · capital Samarobriva

Belgic people of the Somme valley whose town Samarobriva, modern Amiens, hosted Caesar's council of Gaul in 54 BCE.

Origins

The Ambiani held the lower and middle Somme in Picardy. Caesar records that they promised ten thousand warriors to the Belgic league of 57 BCE and surrendered after the league broke up.

Rule and society

Their oppidum of Samarobriva, the bridge on the Samara or Somme, controlled a key crossing. They struck abundant gold coins, some of the earliest in northern Gaul.

Decline and legacy

Caesar held an assembly of the Gallic peoples at Samarobriva in 54 BCE and wintered there. The Ambiani sent men to relieve Alesia in 52 BCE and fought again in 51 BCE. Under Rome Samarobriva became a major city, later Ambianum, the origin of Amiens.
