Athmallik State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kaintragarh

A princely state on the Mahanadi in central Odisha, ruled from Kaintragarh until 1948.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500, but little is reliably known of its founding. The name refers to the eight mallis, or divisions, of its territory.

Rule and society

Athmallik was a forested, thinly populated state on the south bank of the Mahanadi. It was linked with the Sambalpur group of chiefships under the Marathas and passed under British supervision in the 19th century, joining the Orissa Tributary States in 1905. Its history is poorly recorded.

Decline and legacy

Athmallik merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now in Angul district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
