Aulerci Diablintes

300 BCE – 56 BCE (approx.) · capital Noviodunum Diablintum

Branch of the Aulerci in the western Mayenne whose Roman town at Jublains preserves one of the best surviving Roman forts in France.

Origins

The Aulerci were a group of related peoples in north-western Gaul; the Diablintes held the area around Jublains in Mayenne, between the Cenomani and the Redones. Caesar names them among the allies of the Veneti, and Ptolemy gives their town as Noviodunum.

Rule and society

Very little is known of their society before the conquest. They shared in the Atlantic and Armorican trade networks and struck coins of Armorican type.

Decline and legacy

After joining the Veneti in 56 BCE they were defeated and absorbed into Gallia Lugdunensis. Their Roman town of Noviodunum Diablintum at Jublains, with its temple, baths, theatre and fortified store-building, declined in late antiquity when the civitas merged with that of the Cenomani.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
