Baghat State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Solan

A small Rajput hill state of the Shimla hills whose capital at Solan grew into one of the main towns of Himachal Pradesh.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500, but little is reliably known of its origins. Its name is often explained as 'many passes'.

Rule and society

Baghat was a small hill state on the road from Kalka to Shimla. It was occupied by Gurkhas in the early 19th century and restored under British protection after 1815. With the coming of the Kalka-Shimla road and railway, Solan became its capital and grew as a market town.

Decline and legacy

Baghat merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948, and Solan is now the headquarters of Solan district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
