Gurkhas

Also known as Gorkhas

The Gurkhas, or Gorkhas, were originally the soldiers of the Gorkha kingdom, whose king Prithvi Narayan Shah unified Nepal from 1768. Their armies conquered Kumaon, Garhwal and the hill states as far as the Sutlej until the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–1816 drove them back. The British then began recruiting Nepalese soldiers, and Gurkha regiments still serve in the British and Indian armies.
