Kumharsain State

1000 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kumharsain

A small Rajput hill state north of Shimla, one of the Simla Hill States restored under British protection after the Gurkha wars.

Origins

Tradition holds that the ruling family descended from a Rajput named Kirti Singh who came from the plains around 1000 and settled in the hills north of the Sutlej-Giri watershed.

Rule and society

Kumharsain was a small mountain state of terraced farms and forest, ruled by a Rana and at times a tributary of Bashahr State. Little is recorded of its internal history before the 19th century. Gurkha forces of the Kingdom of Nepal occupied it in the early 1800s.

Decline and legacy

After the Anglo-Nepalese War the British issued a sanad in 1815 restoring the Rana as one of the Simla Hill States. Kumharsain merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now part of Shimla district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
