Balsan State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Balsan

A small Rajput hill state east of Shimla, one of the Simla Hill States until 1948.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500 and links it to the Sirmur royal house, but little is reliably known of its origins.

Rule and society

Balsan was a small mountain state on the Giri river. It was occupied by Gurkhas of the Kingdom of Nepal in the early 19th century and restored under British protection after 1815. Little else of its history is recorded.

Decline and legacy

Balsan merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now part of Shimla district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
