Jubbal State

1200 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Jubbal

A Rajput hill state in the upper Pabbar valley east of Shimla, one of the larger Simla Hill States and a source of fine deodar timber.

Origins

Tradition holds that the ruling family was founded around 1200 by a branch of the Sirmur royal house. For much of its history Jubbal was a tributary of Sirmur State.

Rule and society

Jubbal was a mountain state of forests and terraced fields, whose deodar timber was a valuable resource in the British period. Gurkhas of the Kingdom of Nepal occupied it in the early 19th century. After the Anglo-Nepalese War the British took over its affairs and later restored the Rana as an independent Simla Hill State. Little else is recorded of its history.

Decline and legacy

Jubbal merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now in Shimla district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
