Gurma people
The Gurma, or Gourmantché, are a Gur-speaking people of eastern Burkina Faso and neighbouring parts of Niger, Togo and Benin. Their traditional kingdoms, centred on Fada N'Gourma, were among the Mossi-related states of the Volta basin. Before the 19th century Gurma chiefs ruled Liptako, until Fulbe herders rose against them and founded the Emirate of Liptako around 1810.
