Gurs internment camp

1939–1946 · 20th century

Gurs was an internment camp in the foothills of the Pyrenees in south-western France, built in 1939 for refugees from the Spanish Civil War. Under the Vichy regime it held foreign Jews and others, including some 6,500 Jews deported from Baden and the Saar-Palatinate in October 1940. From 1942 many of its inmates were sent via Drancy to Auschwitz.
