Garhwal
Garhwal is the western of the two divisions of Uttarakhand in the central Himalaya of India, containing the sources of the Ganges and Yamuna and the shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath. It took its name from the many forts (garh) of local chiefs, united by the Panwar dynasty. After Gorkha rule from 1804 to 1815 it was divided between British Garhwal and the princely state of Tehri Garhwal.
