Gallic people of the Bessin in Normandy whose town Augustodurum grew into Bayeux.

Origins

Known from Pliny and later Roman sources, the Baiocasses lived along the Calvados coast west of the Orne. In Caesar's day they were probably counted among the Armorican peoples.

Decline and legacy

Under Rome their chief town was Augustodurum, renamed Baiocasses in late antiquity, the origin of Bayeux. It became a bishopric, and in the 11th century the Bayeux Tapestry was made for its cathedral.
