Balasinor State

1758 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Balasinor

A Babi Pathan Nawabi state of central Gujarat, now best known for the dinosaur fossils found on its former lands.

Origins

Balasinor was founded around 1758 by a member of the Babi family, the Pathan dynasty that also held Junagadh State and Radhanpur State. It survived the Maratha period by paying tribute to the Gaekwads of Baroda State.

Rule and society

The Nawabs governed a small agricultural territory as part of the Rewa Kantha Agency. Little is recorded about its internal politics. In 1981 large deposits of dinosaur bones and eggs were found at nearby Raiyoli, now a fossil park promoted by members of the former ruling family.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Balasinor was merged into Bombay State in 1948 and has been part of Gujarat since 1960; it lies in Mahisagar district.
