Canton of Cádiz

1873 CE – 1873 CE · capital Cádiz

A revolutionary canton proclaimed in the port city of Cádiz in July 1873, one of the first to be crushed by the Republic's army.

Origins

In July 1873 the federalists of Cádiz, a city with strong radical and republican traditions, declared a sovereign canton as part of the Cantonal Rebellion against the central government of the Spanish First Republic.

Rule and society

A revolutionary committee governed the city and its militias, but it had little support beyond Cádiz itself and almost no time to organise.

Decline and legacy

After crushing the Canton of Seville, General Manuel Pavía advanced on Cádiz, which submitted in early August 1873 with little resistance.
