Canton of Seville

1873 CE – 1873 CE · capital Seville

A short-lived revolutionary canton proclaimed in Seville during the federalist Cantonal Rebellion of 1873.

Origins

In July 1873, impatient with the slow progress of federalism under the Spanish First Republic, radical federalists across southern and eastern Spain declared their cities sovereign cantons. Seville's federalists proclaimed their canton on 19 July 1873.

Rule and society

The cantonal junta took control of the city, raised volunteer militias and announced radical measures, including the seizure of church property and workers' reforms, intending to form part of a future federal Spain built from the bottom up.

Decline and legacy

Government troops under General Manuel Pavía attacked the city and, after street fighting, crushed the canton at the end of July 1873. Pavía went on to subdue the Canton of Cádiz.
