Charkhari State

1765 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Charkhari

A Bundela Rajput state of Bundelkhand known for its lakes and hill fort, whose Raja stood by the British during the revolt of 1857.

Origins

Charkhari was founded around 1765 by Khuman Singh, a descendant of Maharaja Chhatrasal through the Jaitpur branch, who received a share of the family lands. The British confirmed the state by sanad in 1804.

Rule and society

Charkhari was an 11-gun salute state of the Bundelkhand Agency ruled by a Maharaja from the hill fort of Mangalgarh, ringed by artificial lakes. In 1857 Raja Ratan Singh remained loyal to the British and was besieged by the rebel leader Tantia Tope, for which he was later rewarded.

Decline and legacy

After independence Charkhari joined Vindhya Pradesh and was absorbed by 1950; the town is now in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh.
