Vindhya Pradesh

1948 CE – 1956 CE · capital Rewa

The union of the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand princely states, a short-lived Indian state with its capital at Rewa.

Origins

In 1948 the 35 states of the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand agencies, among them Rewa, Panna, Orchha, Datia and many tiny estates, were merged into the United State of Vindhya Pradesh, with the Maharaja of Rewa, Martand Singh, as Rajpramukh.

Rule and society

The union proved unstable, and in 1950 it was made a centrally administered Part C state, with some enclaves exchanged with Uttar Pradesh. It had a largely rural economy, many former princely estates and low literacy. Rewa served as capital, and Datia, Orchha and Khajuraho lay within its borders.

Decline and legacy

Under the States Reorganisation Act Vindhya Pradesh was merged into Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 1956.
