Datia State

1626 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Datia

A Bundela Rajput state of Bundelkhand, famed for the seven-storey palace built by Bir Singh Deo of Orchha.

Origins

Datia was granted in 1626 to Bhagwan Rao, a son of Bir Singh Deo of Orchha, making it a branch of the Orchha State. Bir Singh Deo had already built the great palace at Datia, completed around 1614.

Rule and society

The Maharajas served the Mughals as mansabdars and later contended with the Marathas. In 1804 Datia made a treaty with the East India Company and became a salute state of the Bundelkhand Agency. Its economy rested on agriculture, and the town grew around the palace and the Pitambara Peeth temple.

Decline and legacy

Datia joined Vindhya Pradesh in 1948 and Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The Datia Palace, a landmark of Bundela architecture, survives in the town.
