Baraundha State

1549 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Baraundha

A small Raghuvanshi Rajput principality in the hills of Bundelkhand, reputed one of the oldest ruling houses of the region.

Origins

The ruling family were Raghuvanshi Rajputs who held lands around Patharkachar in the rugged country south of the Yamuna, in what became Bundelkhand. Their traditional history places the founding of the state in the mid-16th century, but details of its early rulers are sparse.

Rule and society

Baraundha was a small, largely rural state of forest and upland villages ruled by a Raja. After British supremacy in Bundelkhand in the early 19th century it was confirmed by sanad and supervised through the Bundelkhand and later Baghelkhand agencies of the Central India Agency.

Decline and legacy

After Indian independence its ruler acceded to India, and in 1948 Baraundha was merged into the new union of Vindhya Pradesh. Its territory now lies in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
