Chenani State

1100 CE – 1947 CE (approx.) · capital Chenani

A small Rajput hill state north of Jammu that survived as an autonomous fief within the Dogra kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir.

Origins

Chenani's rulers claimed Rajput descent, and tradition dates the state to around 1100. It lay on the Tawi river on the route from Jammu towards Kashmir.

Rule and society

Few details of Chenani's early history are recorded. In the 19th century its Rajas became tributaries of Gulab Singh of Jammu and kept internal autonomy as a jagir within Jammu and Kashmir (princely state).

Decline and legacy

Its special status lapsed after Indian independence, when it was absorbed into Jammu and Kashmir. Chenani is now a town in Udhampur district, known for the Chenani-Nashri road tunnel.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
