Chutu dynasty

150 CE – 345 CE (approx.) · capital Banavasi

A successor dynasty of the Satavahanas in the western Deccan, ruling from Banavasi before the Kadambas.

Origins

As the Satavahana dynasty declined in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, local rulers called Chutus took over the region around Banavasi in northern Karnataka and parts of the coast. They styled themselves Satakarni like their former overlords and may have been Satavahana feudatories or relatives.

Rule and society

The dynasty is known from coins bearing the name Chutukadananda and from a few Prakrit inscriptions at Banavasi and Kanheri recording gifts to Buddhist monasteries, including one by the king Haritiputra Vishnukada Chutukulananda Satakarni. Nothing more is known of their government.

Decline and legacy

The Chutus were followed by the Pallava dynasty, which briefly controlled the area, and then by the Kadamba dynasty founded by Mayurasharma in the mid-4th century, which made Banavasi its capital.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
