Daspalla State

1498 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kunjabangarh

A small princely state in the hills south of the Mahanadi in Odisha, ruled from Kunjabangarh until 1948.

Origins

Tradition holds that the ruling family was a branch of the Bhanja rulers of Baudh State, founding Daspalla around 1498. Its early history is not well documented.

Rule and society

Daspalla was a hilly, forested state with a large Kondh population. It was tributary to the Marathas and, from 1803, one of the Orissa Tributary Mahals under British supervision. Little else of its history is recorded.

Decline and legacy

Daspalla merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now in Nayagarh district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
