Nayagarh State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Nayagarh

A princely state in the hills south-west of Cuttack in Odisha, ruled by a family of Rajput descent until 1948.

Origins

Tradition holds that the ruling family descended from a Baghel Rajput who came from Rewa and founded the state around 1500. Its early history is not well recorded.

Rule and society

Nayagarh was an agricultural state of valleys and wooded hills. It was tributary to the Marathas and, from 1803, one of the Orissa Tributary Mahals under British supervision. Little detailed history survives.

Decline and legacy

Nayagarh merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now the headquarters of Nayagarh district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
