Dhrol State

1595 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Dhrol

A Jadeja Rajput state of Kathiawar founded by a kinsman of the Jams of Nawanagar, one of the salute states of the peninsula.

Origins

Dhrol was founded in 1595 by Hardholji, a brother of Jam Rawal, the founder of Nawanagar, who took the town and its surrounding villages from earlier holders. It belonged to the wider family of Jadeja states that spread from Kutch into northern Kathiawar.

Rule and society

The Thakor Sahib ruled a compact territory of cotton and grain villages in the Halar region. Like other Kathiawar states it paid tribute to the Mughal governors of Gujarat and later to the Gaekwads of Baroda, before coming under British protection after the settlement of 1807. It was a nine-gun salute state.

Decline and legacy

Dhrol merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948, which became part of Bombay State in 1956 and of Gujarat in 1960. The town now lies in Jamnagar district.
