Nawanagar State

1540 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Jamnagar

The Jadeja Rajput state of Saurashtra ruled by the Jams of Jamnagar, home of the cricketer Ranjitsinhji and a wartime refuge for Polish children.

Origins

In 1540 Jam Rawal, a Jadeja Rajput from Kutch, conquered the Halar region of Saurashtra and founded Nawanagar, the 'new town', later called Jamnagar after the dynasty's title.

Rule and society

Nawanagar was known for its pearl fisheries, textiles and port. In 1591 its forces fought the Mughals at Bhuchar Mori, after which the Jams accepted imperial rule. Jam Ranjitsinhji (r. 1907–1933), the famous cricketer, modernised Jamnagar. His nephew Digvijaysinhji sheltered hundreds of Polish refugee children at Balachadi during the Second World War.

Decline and legacy

In 1948 Digvijaysinhji became Rajpramukh of the new United State of Saurashtra, into which Nawanagar merged. Jamnagar is now a city in Gujarat.
