Duchy of Racha
Origins
Racha, the mountain basin of the upper Rioni, became a saeristavo, or duchy, of the united Kingdom of Georgia in the 11th century. Its hereditary eristavis governed on behalf of the crown and guarded the passes to the North Caucasus, while the church of Nikortsminda, built under Bagrat III, marked royal interest in the region.
Rule and society
The dukes ruled from Oni and mountain castles over villages of farmers, herders and vineyard owners. Under the Kakhaberidze family in the 12th and 13th centuries Racha was rich and influential at the royal court. After Georgia split in 1490, Racha became a vassal of the Kingdom of Imereti under the Chkheidze family, whose dukes often rebelled.
Decline and legacy
Repeated rebellions and intervention in Imereti's civil wars brought the dukes into conflict with their kings. The duchy was abolished in 1789 and incorporated directly into the Kingdom of Imereti, which Russia annexed in 1810.
