Dungarpur State

1197 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Dungarpur

The senior Guhila Rajput state of the Vagad region in southern Rajasthan, from which Banswara split in the 16th century, ruled by Maharawals until 1948.

Origins

The Maharawals of Dungarpur claimed descent from the elder line of the Guhila dynasty of Mewar, said to have moved south into the Vagad hills in the late 12th century. The town of Dungarpur was founded in the 14th century and named after a local Bhil chief, Dungaria.

Rule and society

Vagad was a hilly, forested country with a large Bhil population. Rawal Udai Singh was killed fighting Babur at Khanwa in 1527, after which his lands were divided between two sons, creating Banswara State. Dungarpur accepted Mughal and then Maratha overlordship, and signed a treaty with the British in 1818. Its palaces are known for blue-grey stone and mirror work.

Decline and legacy

Maharawal Lakshman Singh joined the United State of Rajasthan in 1948, and Dungarpur is now a district of Rajasthan.
